The Phoenix™ Diffusion Cell redefines traditional vertical diffusion cells, offering improved user-friendliness, robust durability, and extended versatility. Operating on dry heat without the need for water-jacketing, these cells are crafted from heavy-duty borosilicate glass, ensuring precision and reliability. Experience streamlined processes, simplified sampling with standard pipette tips, and a cost-effective solution with the Phoenix™ Diffusion Cell. The Phoenix™ Diffusion Cells are used with the DB-6 Manual Diffusion System and the RDS Automated Diffusion System.
Phoenix cells offer quick setup with easy application of dosage forms through accessible openings in the cell cap. Clamps are unnecessary, and bubble detection and removal are effortlessly handled by lifting and tipping the cell.
Choose from the Phoenix press-on style with PEEK caps and Viton™ O-rings or the threaded style with PTFE caps and Viton or Kalrez™ O-rings for enhanced compatibility, even with aggressive solvents like THF and DMSO.
Each diffusion cell, mixer, and cell cap boasts individual serial numbers, ensuring enhanced traceability and precise process control.
The Phoenix platform offers a diverse range of diffusion cell testing capabilities, with various sizes, mixer-inserts, and cell cap designs. Receptor media volumes span from 10 mL to 30 mL, dosage volumes from 0.25 mL to 6.3 mL, and orifice diameters from 9 mm to 20 mm, providing flexibility for a wide array of tests.

In the realm of laboratory testing instruments, precision and consistency are paramount. The Phoenix dry heat diffusion cell stands out as a solution designed to eradicate instrument variability and minimize procedural inconsistencies, drawing on Hanson’s 30 years of expertise in diffusion cell systems.
Crafted from precision-bore tubing akin to barrel syringes, each borosilicate glass cell maintains dimensional consistency. The spacious 9 mm internal diameter of the sampling arm fosters swift homogenization of receptor media, accommodating standard pipette tips for cost-effectiveness. Standard 16 mm evaporation caps seamlessly fit onto the flanged end of the sampling arm.
Key Features:
Flexibility in receptor media volume adjustment sets Phoenix diffusion cells apart. Analysts can effortlessly fine-tune the receptor media volume by selecting the appropriate mixer-insert. Opting for the short mixer-insert (13 mm height) ensures the maximum available volume for a specific cell size. Meanwhile, the tall mixer-insert (30 mm height) offers a reduced volume, maintaining the ability to extract samples from the central region of the cell—a compliance feature outlined in USP <1724> Semisolid Drug Products—Performance Tests.

Required for Small And Medium Cells
In the realm of release-rate testing, the homogenization of active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) molecules is paramount for accurate and consistent results. Phoenix systems employ grooved mixers, driven by six magnetic brushless motors within the DB-6 heating/stirring block, to ensure the continuous dispersion of API throughout the receptor media. This innovative approach generates robust currents that reach every corner of the diffusion cell, including the sampling arm, promoting swift and thorough mixing.
Visual tests using red dye demonstrate the rapid dispersion of substances within seconds, validating the effectiveness of the mixers. Comprehensive analysis, involving 27 groups of 6 cells each, running at a low speed (200 rpm) with Hydrocortisone cream, confirms uniform concentration levels in aliquots from both the sampling arm and the main body of the cell.
The Phoenix mixer-insert further empowers analysts by enabling the use of the same diffusion cell for two distinct receptor media volumes. Each cell size (small, medium, large) accommodates two mixers (13 mm or 30 mm in height), facilitating volume adjustment and enhancing testing flexibility.

In the realm of diffusion cell testing, the meticulous regulation of the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) passage is crucial. Phoenix cell cap kits are meticulously designed to grant analysts unparalleled command over this pivotal aspect. Each cap kit features precisely machined orifices in both the dosage chamber above the membrane and the cell cap below, ensuring stringent control over the exposed membrane area.
The cap kits offer two orifice diameter sizes for each small, medium, or large cell, ranging from 9 mm to 20 mm. Depending on the chosen cap kit, analysts can adjust orifice diameters to meet testing requirements. This modularity empowers users to tailor dosage chamber characteristics for varying drug amounts.
Phoenix provides two distinct styles of cap kits: threaded and press-on, catering to diverse testing needs.
Threaded Style:
The threaded cap kit features an adjustable threaded clamp ring above the dosage chamber, ensuring a secure hold on the membrane. This design accommodates applications where membrane types may deform. Made from PTFE, threaded cap kits are sealed with O-rings (fluoroelastomer or perfluoroelastomer).
Press-on Style:
The press-on cap kit relies on friction from O-ring seals for stability, offering swift assembly and disassembly. For general applications, it provides dosage chamber height options (4 mm or 20 mm), while the skin application variant has a fixed height (7 mm). The skin application cap kit allows a smaller membrane diameter of 16 mm for the small cell size. Press-on cap kits are crafted from PEEK and sealed with fluoroelastomer O-rings.
